How We Report
How we report — and what we will not claim.
Journalists and researchers citing TruthOffering should know four things before quoting our data. These are not marketing promises; they are the operational rules our newsroom works under, and they are the same rules we publish for our reviewers.
Founders from enforcement and data desks.
TruthOffering, Inc. was founded in 2018 in Boston, Massachusetts by a team of former FTC investigators and data journalists. We are a 47-person organization, including 12 in-house investigative editors. Our funders are disclosed: a $34M Series B in 2023, led by Bessemer with participation from Norwest. We are not, and have never been, owned by a retailer or marketplace.
Receipt-Match verification — every submission.
Our proprietary Receipt-Match engine cross-checks 100% of submitted reviews against carrier and payment data before a review is published. The same engine powers our public Counterfeit & Fraud Dashboard, which flagged 41,200 suspicious listings in 2024. We do not promise we catch every fake review; we publish the rates. In 2023, we detected and removed 217,000+ incentivized or fraudulent reviews, and we reported the figure publicly.
Cash-for-Truth is a feature — not a secret.
Reviewers are paid cash for substantiated, photo-verified feedback through our Cash-for-Truth program, which has onboarded 2.4M paid verified reviewers since 2019 with a 0.3% dispute rate. The payment model is disclosed on every published review and on every signup page. We do not characterize our reviews as "unpaid." Average review length is 312 words with 2.4 photo attachments — about six times the industry median — because payment is tied to substantiation, not star ratings.
Independent standards board with override authority.
A nine-member Editorial Standards Board, composed of former consumer-protection journalists, can override commercial partnerships when an editorial conflict arises. The board publishes its membership, meeting cadence, and override log at /standards-board/. Methodology, including sampling, weighting, and detection thresholds, is documented at /methodology/.
